Mixed Media Flowers - Kid's Art Class

My Example

The girls in my after school art class worked on a mixed media project for the last two weeks.  In the first class, we talked about color and picked out papers that would compliment the color scheme they wanted to use.  Then we covered the canvas panels with old book paper using mod podge.  They painted the canvases using credit cards and various textures (bubble wrap, plastic drawer liner, etc.) to make impressions.  The girls then cut out their flowers and leaves.  In our final class, we used acrylic and rubber stamps with permanent, waterproof ink to add additional interest to the background.  They then placed their papers on the canvas (using mod podge again) and outlined everything with charcoal pencil (smudged) and markers.  For a final touch, we added buttons to the flower centers.

I love projects like this one where the girls can explore their own creativity.  The results are always so much more interesting than I could have come up with on my own!
