Easy Rustic Pumpkin Mixed Media Artwork Tutorial

Autumn is my favorite time of year.  And pumpkins are so simple and lovely. I did this whimsical little project with my kids art class last fall.  They did such a great job with it. I love how they are all a little bit different.  We painted the backgrounds with light blue and then used bubble wrap & shelf liner to create texture in the sky (using white and blue) and credit cards scraped through wet green paint to make grass. On the "Fall" banners we used stamps with permanent ink (make sure it is waterproof or it will smear when you glue it down).
I show the rest of the process in my YouTube video here:

Angela's Art Class Registration

I am now taking registration for my Spring series of kids art lessons at the Russellville, Arkansas Hobby Lobby.  I will be doing two 6-week sessions, starting on Wednesday, February 19th and running through May 14th with a week off for Spring Break.

We will be doing a lot of fun new projects. Including acrylic dog portraits (personalized so the kids can paint their own pets), funky polymer clay birds, butterfly zentangle watercolors, torn paper mixed media paintings. hand-sewn owls, decorative line landscape paintings and more!

Email me at angelasartistry@gmail.com to register.

Polymer Clay Covered Vases - Summer Art Camp 2013

This was probably my favorite project of the week. The kids each made two polymer clay "canes" (a bullseye and a spiral) which were then cut into slices.  Then starting at the bottom of the vase they stacked the cane slices onto the glass to cover it. We finished by pressing the canes flat with an acrylic rolling pin.

I baked them in a glass casserole dish loosely covered with foil. I started out by placing the dish in a cold oven and then set the temp for 265 degrees (we used skulpey and fimo). This way the glass would slowly heat up and would not crack from quick temperature change. I cooked them for 20 min and then shut off the oven and left them inside until cool.  The following day I varnished them to seal and give some shine.

Mixed Media Journals - Summer Art Camp 2013

I started out the week of our summer art camp with a mixed media journal project.  The girls used stamps and scrapbook papers to create a mosaic tile pattern on the covers.  Then they embellished with buttons, flowers, ribbon, brads and fun objects.  It was a great project.  The girls really enjoyed personalizing their journals.

Clay Creations - Kid's Art Class

Here are some of the fun polymer clay creations that my classes made a couple of weeks ago.  I printed off some cute ideas that I found on Pinterest and let the kids decide what they wanted to make.  You can see there was a lot of variety!  The robots are some of my favorites.  I made the wire coils for the arms, legs & necks with floral wire that I wrapped around a piece of clothing hanger wire.  It worked great, and the coils were much stronger than I thought they would be (since the floral wire is so thin).

You can check out the gorgeous clay creations of HerArtSheLoves that inspired our robots below.

Funky Pumpkins - Kid's Art Class

We made the cutest pumpkins in art class this week!  I traced and cut out large circles (pizza pan size) onto a graphic black and white fabric. The kids sewed around the edge of the circles and then pulled the ends of the string to gather the fabric at the neck.  They then stuffed their pumpkins and tied off the opening (leaving a little space for the stem) and sewed through the bottom of the pumpkins with orange yarn to create that ribbed pumpkin look.  To finish them, I used hot glue to attach a felt piece and stick to the top.  Then we tied raffia and ribbon bows and added curled cloth-covered wire for a cute accent.  The kids were really proud of their creations.  I love how they turned out.
