Cute Houses Mixed Media Project - Kid's Art Class

We made some adorable mixed media houses on canvas this week.

I often get asked what "mixed media" means.  All it means is that we are using a mix of different media (acrylics, oil paint, pastels, paper, ink, pencil, crayon, charcoal, objects, fixatives, etc.) to create the artwork.  In this project, we used acrylic paint to cover the canvas panels, scrapbook papers outlined with charcoal and adhered with mod podge, and buttons, markers and ribbon to embellish.

I would caution that the charcoal needs to be put on very lightly and smudged well before using mod podge.  In some cases, we had bleeding happening.  I like the blurred look of the charcoal but may try to find a different, more controlled, way to achieve the same look in future classes. 

After School Art Lessons

I am taking registration now for my after school art class.  We will have two four-week sessions starting February 21st with a week off for Spring Break in between.  Class size is limited. 

Kid's Painting Class - Butterflies

Today we worked on some butterflies in my kid's painting class. Yesterday we did the backgrounds on the canvases using plastic wrap on the wet paint to give them fun texture.

The girls drew their butterflies and transfered them onto canvas with graphite paper then used paint and water soluble pencils to add fine details.  I think they turned out amazing!  The oldest in the class is 10 and the youngest is 7!  Pretty amazing talent!

"Up Seems So Down" Album Cover

I started working on a painting for an album cover today.  Robb McCormick (aka Some Guy Named Robb) is releasing a new album in December called "Up Seems So Down".   I'm really excited about working on this.  The theme of the album is based on confusion.  The moon is mentioned in some of the lyrics so I wanted to use it on the cover.  The idea I had was to have the sun and moon swap positions in the sky.  Moon at dawn, sun at night.  Hopefully it will translate to canvas like I am picturing it!

New Painting Class

I will be teaching painting workshops during the week of July 12-16th.   We will be completing three paintings: a simple landscape with poppies (similar to above), a still life and a modern abstract. 

The adult class will be held from 7:30 - 9 pm, Monday - Friday, at Fellowship of Christians, Russellville, AR.

The kids class (for grades 3 and up) will be held from 1:00 - 2:30 pm Monday - Friday at Hobby Lobby in Russellville, AR.

Cost for the series is $50 plus supplies (approx. $50).

Family Tree Project

This is my newest commission. I am working on it with my friend Ginger. We've collaborated on special projects like this for the past 5 years or so. We design and paint the basics together and I do the finishing touches. This set of paintings is for a nursery.

This is the design for the family tree paintings. They will hang side by side with the mother's side on one canvas and the father's side on the other canvas.

This canvas is almost finished. I need to add the baby's monogram initials to the center and do a bit of outlining on the border.


More progress made on the tree and the monogram paintings. The picture below makes the hill behind the tree look brown but it is actually a red, it just needs another coat of paint.


This one still needs another coat or two on the letters, but otherwise it's finished.

I added detail to the leaves of the tree today. I also changed a few of the leaves to a light phthalo green blend to liven up the colors. Now all that is left to do is to outline the leaves (not sure yet, but probably in a dark brown), add some dots around the tree and add the names. I will also add some details to the birds and clean up the ground lines a bit. I'm really liking the fun, sort of retro feel to the tree so far.
