Pop of Color Black and White Trees | Acrylic Painting Tutorial

Black and White is a huge trend in painting right now. So I thought I would do a 2 part video showing how you can make a modern black & white treescape acrylic painting on canvas. This is super easy and fun  DIY project for beginners. The materials are a large flat brush (sponge brush is ok), a sea sponge, a plastic credit card and acrylic paints in black, white and your choice of color.

Black and White Trees Video (Part 1) shows how to do the black and white trees.

Pop of Color Video (Part 2) shows how to add color to one of the trees. I show turquoise, yellow and purple in the video but you can refer to my pink cherry tree or red oak tree videos if you prefer those colors. The steps are the same. Hope you enjoy!

Colored Pencils

Crayons and/or oil pastels, 

White or Colored Chalk, 

Acrylic Paints: Other colors

(white, red, yellow, blue, turquoise, green, orange, purple, pink, black, dark brown - whatever fun colors you like), 

Watercolor set

Black Sharpie (permanent) markers (fine & extra fine), 

Mod Podge or DecoPage

Scrapbook Papers 6"x6" Pad

Scissors

1" & 2" Foam Brushes

1/2" Flat Brush, 

1/4" Round Detail Brush, 

3 Canvas Panels (11"x14" or 12"x12") 

2  Watercolor or Mix Media Paper 9"x12"

Bubble wrap (or textured, patterned print-making objects), 

Buttons (various colors, 1or 2 dozen)

Thick craft glue or glue gun

Paper Towels

Water Jar (and water in a spray bottle if handy)

Easy Tree Painting - Kids Art Project

This was a really great painting project I did with my art class. I let them choose a neutral background color and then we painted in the details of the trees with credit cards and sea sponges.  It was a very easy project and the kids did a great job.  We focused on the shadows and highlights on the trees to make them a little dimensional. They also used their fingers to smear paint underneath the trees and sometimes even in the trees.

Easy Birch Tree Painting Tutorial - Free Acrylic Painting Lesson

Supplies used:
10"x20" Canvas
Masking or Painters Tape (3/4", 1", 1.5", 2" widths)
Acrylic Paints (various colors, including metallic and black)
Sponge Brush
Plastic Gift Card
Circular objects in various sizes for stamping

Easy Birch Trees - Kid's Art Class

 This was one of those projects that left the kids so proud of themselves afterwards.  Several of them said it was easier than they thought it would be.  We used different sizes of painters & masking tapes to make the tree trunks (the largest widths were put on first so they would come off last to get the right perspective).  Then the kids painted the backgrounds with two different acrylic paints, blending them in the middle where they met.  We used metallic paints to make the circles with different sized items (small sponges, jar lids, etc.).  Then we carefully tore off the "background" tree tape (the smallest widths that were crossing over the larger trees).  Using credit cards and black paint, they scraped along the tree trunks on either side to make their birch bark.  It is amazingly easy and the kids had a blast.  As each tree was finished we would tear off another piece of tape until all the tree trunks were painted.  Doing the trees in stages made sure that the perspective stayed true and kept it from being too confusing for the kids.  Kept me running in circles supervising though!

Button Trees - Kids Art Class

I have been wanting to try these adorable button trees, that I found on Pinterest, for months.  We finally did them this week in my kid's art class.  It was a great craft.  I think the kids really had fun with them.  Here is my video lesson from YouTube:

Zentangle Pen & Ink Watercolor Paintings

We did "zentangle" pen & ink watercolor paintings today in my after school art class. The girls are all ages 7-10 and did an amazing job.
