Easy Rustic Pumpkin Mixed Media Artwork Tutorial

Autumn is my favorite time of year.  And pumpkins are so simple and lovely. I did this whimsical little project with my kids art class last fall.  They did such a great job with it. I love how they are all a little bit different.  We painted the backgrounds with light blue and then used bubble wrap & shelf liner to create texture in the sky (using white and blue) and credit cards scraped through wet green paint to make grass. On the "Fall" banners we used stamps with permanent ink (make sure it is waterproof or it will smear when you glue it down).

Floral Deer Silhouette Painting Video Tutorial

This was an especially fun painting. I did it live on YouTube as part of the #PawgustArt (Animal Theme) event that was hosted by the Creative Arts Collaboration group I belong to. This was my first time doing a live stream painting event and it was a lot of fun. I will show links to my full length video and the shorter time lapse one below.

First I found a deer image from the internet and traced it's outline. Notice I did not include the whole neck and I thickened up parts of the antlers and adjusted the ear a little so it was not so close to the antlers.  Then using graphite paper I transferred my outline to my sketch book.

I sketched out the flowers and leaves using the outline of the deer as much as possible. I also incorporated the eye and nose as parts of leaves and flowers. Fit your details inside the outline and fill all the empty spaces if possible without overlapping much.  Then trace out your design leaving out the original outline.  Transfer this to your mat board or other surface with graphite paper (I used white graphite for my dark grey background).

I sealed the Mat Board (just a scrap from a frame shop) with Clear Gesso and lightly sanded it to give it a distressed look. It also protected the background from water and paint drips. I used Golden Fluid Acrylic Titanium White to paint in my details. You could use a white marker or other color paint as well.

Easy Tree Painting - Kids Art Project

This was a really great painting project I did with my art class. I let them choose a neutral background color and then we painted in the details of the trees with credit cards and sea sponges.  It was a very easy project and the kids did a great job.  We focused on the shadows and highlights on the trees to make them a little dimensional. They also used their fingers to smear paint underneath the trees and sometimes even in the trees.

Layered Vellum Leaf Rubbing - Kids Art Class

This was a super fun and easy project. The vellum layer gave it a beautiful, almost ethereal, look.

The bottom layer is plain drawing paper which was stamped with leaf-shaped stamps in dark ink colors.  The top layer is vellum which has real leaf rubbings using colored pencils.  Since they could see the leaves under the vellum they were able to carefully trace and fill in the leaves.  We also added extra leaf stamps in lighter ink colors onto the vellum.  To finish, we framed them to make the layers really show.

 

 

Hot Air Balloon Mixed Media - Kids Art Class

My art class did a great job with this project. It was a little tricky (lots of cutting and careful placing) so I don't think I would attempt it with younger kids again.  My students are aged 8-13 and the youngest ones needed a lot of help.
 

I had them use rubber stamps with permanent ink on their blank canvas panels.  Then we painted over everything and added effects with bubble wrap and other textures.  Stamping before painting caused a cool washed out effect in the background. Then I had them draw and cut out templates from cardstock and use them to trace and cut patterned papers.  Mod podge was used to adhere the paper balloons and clouds. We also added real string for the basket ropes.  I wish they had been able to add outlines to their balloons but we ran out of time (class runs 1 1/2 hours).
